What’s better than that fresh and light feeling you get after you’ve scrubbed all of those dead skin cells off your face, right!?
Here’s why that is… As skin cells migrate to the surface of the skin they build up and die, clogging pores and creating a “crust”, if you will. Beneath that dull, lifeless skin you see on the surface, lies youthful, vibrant skin. So as we exfoliate the skin, below, we find that soft, silky and supple skin we seek!
Exfoliation is an essential part of any skin care regimen in order to promote cell turnover and keep the skin youthful and healthy. But like any good thing, if used in excess, it can over-dry the skin and create problems, like breakouts.
Exfoliation at home should be done 2-3 times a week, tops. Make sure that if you’re using a mechanical scrub that the granules are completely round. Some almond or other nut scrubs on the market are irregular in shape and they can cause scarring of the pores by making them larger or stretching them, thus, allowing for dirt and oil to get trapped.
The same applies for any at-home alpha-hydroxy acids or beta-hydroxy acids. These are chemical exfoliants that are basically put on the skin and left to do its “chemical” work. Rather than you mechanically moving anything around the skin to slough the dead skin cells off, the acids eat away at the dead skin cells, and remove them that way.
Keep in mind that while exfoliation is one of the key components to maintaining youthful skin, whatever you take away you MUST replenish. As you cleanse and exfoliate your skin, you are also removing a natural protective layer, that if left vulnerable, can be invaded by bacteria. Always apply a good moisturizer with SPF after cleansing or exfoliating.
While its essential to exfoliate regularly to keep the skin fresh, having a Professional Chemical Peel or Microdermabrasion Treatment every 4-6 weeks is just as important. It’s during these treatments that underlying issues can be addressed and taken care of before they reach the surface.
Preservation is the key to maintaining youthful skin at any age 🙂
Never attempt to use professional grade products at home, as, if used inappropriately, it will burn and scar the skin.
